Jahresrückblick 2013: April - Juni

Wie aus dem letzten Jahr gewohnt, gibt es auch in 2013 wieder einen kleinen Rückblick auf die hinter uns liegenden 12 Apple-Monate zwischen den Feiertagen. Somit verbleibt die Zeit auch ohne spannende Meldungen nicht ganz Apple-frei. Auch das Jahr 2013 hielt also mal wieder einige spannende, aber auch überraschende Momente in Sachen Apple parat. In vier Folgen werfe ich einen Blick zurück auf das, was die Apple-Welt im Jahr 2013 bewegt hat. Nach dem Rückblick auf den Zeitraum Januar bis März gibt es heute die wichtigsten News aus den Monaten April bis Juni.

April

Nachdem Apple in diesem Jahr auf eine iPad-Präsentation im März verzichtet hatte und sich immer mehr der Herbst als neuer Präsentationstermin herauskristallisierte, verlegte sich die Gerüchteküche auf Spekulationen zum Design der kommenden Generation. Nachdem bereits Anfang des Jahres verschiedene Gerüchte aufgetaucht waren, wonach Apple das Design des großen iPad an das des iPad mini angleichen würde, tauchten nun erste Fotos von vermeintlichen Bauteilen auf, die dies bestätigten. Zudem wurden bereits erste Spezifikationen des neuen iPad gehandelt, die allesamt später tatsächlich so eintreffen sollten.

Auch das Thema Farben für das iPhone gewann immer mehr an Fahrt. Erstmals tauchte dazu auch eine tatsächlich korrekte Rückseitenschale für das Gerät auf. Die im April gehandelte 12 Megapixel-Kamera sollte hingegen ebenso wenig Realität werden, wie der zwischenzeitlich gemunkelte Verkaufsstart im Juli.

Mit einer Sonderseite feierte Apple im April den zehnten Geburtstag des iTunes Store, der, wie es Steve Jobs angekündigt hatte, die Art und Weise, wie wir Musik kaufen komplett revolutionierte.

Einen großen Teil der Schlagzeilen der ersten Jahreshälfte bestimmte die Deutsche Telekom mit der Ankündigung, künftig DSL-Tarife nach dem Verbrauch eines bestimmten Inklusivvolumens auf ein praktisch nicht mehr brauchbares Maß drosseln zu wollen. Die Ankündigung sorgte für ebenso viel Aufsehen wie Empörung und sollte uns das ganze Jahr über beschäftigen.

Einen Paukenschlag hielt das Ende des Monats April noch bereit. Nach langem Warten kündigte Apple die diesjährige WWDC an. Die zeitgleich in den Verkauf gegangenen Karten für das Entwickler-Event waren nach schlanken 180 Sekunden bereits ausverkauft, was viele enttäuschte Entwickler zurück ließ. Nicht zuletzt deswegen kündigte Apple kurze Zeit später die Tech Talk World Tour an, die unter anderem auch wieder in Berlin Station machen sollte.

Mai

Über zwei Jahre hatte Apple an der alten Filmbühne Wien am Berliner Kurfürstendamm gewerkelt, ehe Anfang des Monats dort Deutschlands bislang größter Apple Retail Store erstmals seine Pforten öffnete. Und wer den Store schon einmal auf seinen zwei Etagen komplett gesehen hat, wird bestätigen, dass sich die Wartezeit gelohnt hat. Äußerst großzügig mit viel Holz, Stein und einer hohen Decke präsentiert sich der Verkaufsraum im Erdgeschoss. In einer Ecke führt eine rote Treppe (nein, keine gewohnte Glastreppe) in die höher gelegenen Räume des ehemaligen Kinos. Hier findet man, ebenfalls sehr großzügig ausgelegt, einen Besprechungsraum (Briefing Room) und einen Saal für Präsentationen und andere Veranstaltungen. Auf insgesamt 5.000 qm präsentiert Apple hier nun sein Produkte. Parallel dazu erfolgt die Quasi-Bestätigung eines kommenden Stores im Düsseldorfer Kö-Bogen.

Im Mai folgte der nächste AppStore-Meilenstein. Zu Beginn des Monats startete Apple den Countdown zu 50 Milliarden Downloads. Dieser endete am 15. Mai mit dem 50-milliardsten Download einer App aus dem erst 5 Jahre zuvor gestarteten virtuellen Kaufhaus. Brandon Ashmor aus Mentor, Ohio war der glückliche Käufer, der von Apple mit einem iTunes-Gutschein in Höhe von $ 10.000 belohnt wurde.

Einen weiteren Meilenstein erreichte übrigens auch der iPod touch. Von diesem konnte Apple inzwischen über 100 Millionen Stück an den Mann bringen. Parallel dazu nahm Apple die vierte Generation des Geräts aus dem Programm und ersetzte diese durch eine neue 16 GB Variante der fünften Generation.

Die Telekom sorgte weiter mit ihren Plänen zur Drosselung von DSL-Flatrate-Tarifen für Aufsehen. Es folgte eine Abmahnung der Verbraucherzentrale NRW, die später im Jahr noch zu einem teilweisen Umdenken bei der Telekom führen sollte.

Für seinen Online Store führte Apple im Mai eine willkommene Neuerung ein. So ist es dort nun auch möglich, per PayPal zu bezahlen. Zuvor gestattete Apple hier nur das Zahlen per Kreditkarte oder Überweisung.

Das diesjährige iPhone wurde weiterhin für den Herbst erwartet. Den japanischen Kollegen von Macotakara gelang es jedoch, erstmals ein Foto des neuen, später als "TrueTone" bekannten neuen LED-Blitzes zu präsentieren.

Erstmals kamen im Mai Gerüchte auf, wonach Apple an einem "iPad Maxi" arbeiten würde, welches ein knapp 13" großes Display besitzen sollte. Ich habe diese Gerüchte relativ schnell ins Reich der Fabel verwiesen. Ob dies ein wenig zu vorzeitig war, wird sich zeigen müssen. Gegen Ende des Jahres nahmen Gerüchte in diese Richtung nämlich immer weiter an Fahrt auf.

Und auch der Mai hielt wieder ein iOS-Update bereit. Apple aktualisierte iPhone, iPad und iPod touch auf Version 6.1.4. iTunes erhielt zudem ein kleines Update auf Version 11.0.3

Juni

Der Juni stand erwartungsgemäß ganz im Zeichen der WWDC und damit einhergehend auch der neuen Version von OS X und iOS 7. Was, wie auch in den letzten beiden Jahren, fehlte, war die aus den vorhergangenen Jahren gewohnte Vorstellung der neuen iPhone-Generation, die jedoch später im Jahr nachgeholt wurde.

Das erste Thema auf der WWDC war dann auch das nächste große Update für OS X, welches den Namen "Mavericks" tragen sollte. Damit verabschiedet sich Apple von der Namensgebung nach Großkatzen und wird sich künftig wohl an kalifornischen Landschaften orientieren. Ein Ansatz, welcher perfekt zum neuen Slogan "Designed by Apple in California" passt. Angekündigt wurde das Update für den Herbst. Es sollte verschiedene Neuerungen mitbringen, darunter eine Karten-App, iBooks für den Mac, Tags und Tabs für den Finder, Push Notifications für Webseiten und ressourcenschonendere Prozesse. Die erste Vorabversion wurde nach der WWDC-Keynote an die Entwickler verteilt. Für den Herbst angekündigt wurde zudem "iWork für iCloud", eine Online-Version der iWork-Apps, die sich nahtlos mit den Mac- und iOS-Versionen verstehen soll.

Mit Spannung wurde auch die Präsentation des vollkommen neu gestalteten und erstmals unter der Federführung von Jony Ive und Craig Federighi entstandenen iOS 7 erwartet. Neben der optischen Überarbeitung, die sich durch saämtliche Bereiche des Systems zieht, wurden auch diverse neue Funktionen eingeführt, wie z.B. das Kontrollzentrum, welches sich durch einen Wisch von unten nach oben aktivieren lässt und welches einen Schnellzugriff auf verschiedene Systemfunktionen bietet. Zudem können künftig alle Apps vom neuen Multitasking profitieren, welches sich jetzt auch in einer anderen Ansicht des App-Switchers zeigt. Die Kamera-App erhält nun Live-Filter und ein neues Design. Das erwartete iRadio kam ebenfalls - allerdings unter dem Namen "iTunes Radio" und vorerst ausschließlich in den USA. iOS 7 wurde für den Herbst angekündigt, Entwickler erhielten nach der Keynote Zugriff auf die erste Beta-Version.

An Hardware hatte Apple eher wenig auf der WWDC zu bieten. Als unmittelbar verfügbare Geräte wurden lediglich neue AirPort-Basisstationen und Time Capsules mit Unterstützung des schnelleren WLAN-Standards 802.11ac, sowie neue MacBook Air vorgestellt, die ebenfalls den neuen Standard unterstützen und Intels Haswell-Chips verwendeten. Die genannten neuen Geräte waren direkt nach der Keynote im Apple Store zu bestellen.

Ebenfalls präsentiert wurde ein radikal neu gestalteter Mac Pro. Nachdem das alte Modell seit März nicht mehr in der EU verkauft werden durfte, hielten sich Gerüchte um ein neues Gerät. Dieses wurde rund gestaltet und ist deutlich kleiner als alle anderen Mac Pro vor ihm. Dafür bietet er keine internen Erweiterungsmöglichkeiten mehr. Peripherie, externe Festplatten, usw. werden nun über zahlreich vorhandene Thunderbolt- und USB-Anschlüsse angebunden. Das Gerät sollte später im Jahr auf den Markt kommen.

Noch bevor die WWDC startete sorgte ein Mann für Aufsehen, der uns den Rest des Jahres noch eingehend beschäftigen sollte. Sein Name: Edward Snowden. Ein erster Bericht drehte sich um ein US-Abhörprogramm namens PRISM, über das US-Behörden Zugriff auf persönliche Daten von Millionen von Nutzern von bekannten IT-Unternehmen, darunter auch Apple, haben soll. Apple dementierte umgehend sowohl die eigene Kenntnis über PRISM, als auch einen direkten Zugriff für US-Behörden auf die eigenen Server und veröffentlichte eine Stellungnahme zum Umgang mit Nutzerdaten.

Auch in Sachen iPhone-Gerüchte ging es weiter. Ins Reich der Fabel verwies ich zunächst das erstmals aufgekommene Gerücht, wonach es eine goldene Farbvariante des iPhone geben sollte. (Mal wieder) ein Trugschluss wie sich später im Jahr herausstellen sollte. Erstmals deutete sich bereits an, dass das von vielen als "Billig-iPhone" bezeichnete neue Kunststoff-Modell wohl gar nicht so billig werden würde, wie viele zunächst annahmen. Erstmals waren zudem Fotos von den farbigen Rückseiten des neuen Modells zu sehen.

Auch diverse Updates hielt Apple für den Kuni bereit. OS X Mountain Lion sprang auf Version 10.8.4, während iTunes auf Version 11.0.4 und die Apple TV Software auf Version 5.3 kletterten.
