Wie Apple bekannt gegeben hat, ist der Unternehmensmitbegründer und frühere CEO Steve Jobs im Alter von 56 verstorben. Damit verliert die Welt nicht nur einen großen Vordenker und Visionär sondern vor allem auch einen von vielen geschätzten Menschen, der viele seiner Mitmenschen, und dazu zähle auch ausdrücklich ich, mit seinen Produkten und Ideen inspiriert hat. Steve Jobs verliert damit den Kampf gegen seinen Körper, nachdem er bereits im Jahr 2004 an Bauchspeicheldrüsenkrebs erkrankt war und in 2009 eine neue Leber erhalten hatte. Nach mehreren gesundheitsbedingten Auszeiten hatte er erst Ende August seinen Posten als CEO an Tim Cook übergeben, weil er der Meinung war, seine Aufgaben nicht mehr erfüllen zu können. Nun also die traurige Gewissheit, dass die Bedenken um seinen gesundheitlichen Zustand leider begründet waren. Die Flaggen auf dem Apple Campus wurden auf Halbmast gesetzt. Kondolenzbekundungen werden über die E-Mail Adresse rememberingsteve@apple.com entgegen genommen.

Das Unternehmen hat das folgende Statement auf seiner Webseite veröffentlicht:

"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Der Aufischtsrat von Apple wird mit den Worten zitiert:

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

Auch Steve’s Familie hat sich bereits zu Wort gemeldet:

"Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family. In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve's illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories. We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief."

In einem offenen Brief wendet sich Apple CEO Tim Cook an die Apple Belegschaft:

Team,

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.”

Statements weiterer prominenter Wegbegleiter von Steve, wie Bill Gates oder Mark Zuckerberg, können bei den Kollegen von MacRumors eingesehen werden. Auch ich bin über diese Nachricht unendlich traurig und kann sie noch gar nicht wirklich einordnen. Die Gedanken sollten nun aber vor allem bei Steve’s Freunden und Familie sein. Vor dieser Nachricht treten viele Dinge in den Hintergrund. In unseren Herzen und Erinnerungen, aber natürlich auch in seinen Visionen und Produkten wird Steve immer weiter leben. Er hat die Welt verändert wie es nur sehr wenige Menschen schaffen und sein Vermächtnis wird immer fortbestehen.

Im Zusammenhang mit dem Tod von Steve Jobns sei auch noch einmal jedem das folgende Video einer Ansprache von ihm vor Absolventen der Stanford University empfohlen, in dem er unter anderem auch auf seine Sterblichkeit eingeht:

"Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."
