Android ist wenig überraschend nach wie vor das dominierende mobile Betriebssystem. Allein die Tatsache, dass es auf den Endgeräten der unterschiedlichsten Hersteller eingesetzt wird, verschafft ihm natürlich einen großen Reichweitenvorteil gegenüber Apples iOS. Allerdings verkleinerte sich zuletzt der Abstand zwischen den beiden Systemen, was ohne Zweifel als Erfolg für Apple gewertet werden kann. So geht aus den aktuellen Zahlen von StockApps hervor, dass Android aktuell auf einen Marktanteil von 69,74% kommt. Vor vier Jahren, im Juli 2018 waren es allerdings noch 77,32%. Im selben Zeitraum konnte iOS hingegen von 19,4% auf 25,49% zulegen.

Allerdings gibt es auch große regionale Unterschiede. Während Apple mit seinem iOS vor allem in Nordamerika traditionell stark ist und hier mehr als die Hälte des Marktes für sich reklamieren kann, laufen in Südamerika und Afrika gerade mal 10% der Smartphones unter iOS. Zurückzuführen ist dies selbstverständlich auf den vergleichsweise hohen Preis, den man für Apple-Geräte hinblättern muss. In Cupertino hat man zuletzt allerdings auch zumindest das mittlere Preissegment mit dem iPhone SE verstärkt ins Blickfeld genommen, so dass die Zugewinne beim Marktanteil in den vergangenen vier Jahren unter anderem auch hierauf zurückzuführen sein dürften.
