Nach wie vor bestimmt auch der Handelsstreit zwischen den USA und China die Geschehnisse in und um Cupertino. In ungewohnt deutlicher Form hat sich Apple nun sogar in einem Brief an den United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer [PDF] gewandt (via CNBC) und die Trump-Regierung dringend davor gewarnt, die nächste Stufe der 25%igen Strafzölle auf Importwaren aus China zu zünden, die beinahe alle Produkte des iPhone-Herstellers betreffen würden. Hierzu gehören neben dem iPhone selbst auch das iPad, der Mac, die Apple Watch, das Apple TV, die AirPods, die Beats-Produkte, den HomePod sowie Akkus und Ersatzteile.

Laut Apple würde eine Erhebung von Zöllen auf diese Produkte der US-Wirtschaft eher schaden als ihr zu helfen. So schreibt Apple:

U.S. tariffs on Apple's products would result in a reduction of Apple's U.S. economic contribution.

U.S. tariffs would also weigh on Apple's global competitiveness. The Chinese producers we compete with in global markets do not have a significant presence in the U.S. market, and so would not be impacted by U.S. tariffs. Neither would our other major non-U.S. competitors. A U.S. tariff would, therefore, tilt the playing field in favor of our global competitors.

We urge you not to proceed with these tariffs. Thank you for your consideration of our comments.

Darüber hinaus führt Apple auch seine verschiedenen Beiträge zur US-Wirtschaft auf und bezeichnet sich selbst als "proud U.S. company", die nicht nur der größte Steuerzahler der USA sei, sondern auch einer der größten Arbeitgeber.

Apple is also the largest U.S. corporate taxpayer to the U.S. Treasury and pays billions more each year in local property, sales, and employee taxes.

Finally, Apple's products are used by American families, students, businesses, government agencies, schools, and hospitals to communicate, teach, improve health outcomes, and enhance creativity and enterprise.

Die Auswirkungen des Handelsstreits sind bereits jetzt deutlich für Apple zu spüren. So haben sich in China bereits wahre Anti-Apple Kampagnen gebildet und auch der Rückgang bei den iPhone-Absätzen im Reich der Mitte ist Hauptverantwortlich für die zuletzt schwachen Zahlen des iPhone generell. Ob die Trump-Regierung sich von dem Apple-Brief beeinflussen lässt, muss allerdings stark bezweifelt und abgewartet werden.
