Überfällig im Zeitalter der Messenger: Viele Provider stellen Ende 2022 die Unterstützung von MMS ein

Die etwas älteren Semester unter meinen Lesern werden sich noch an die beiden Mobilfunkdienste SMS und MMS erinnern. Während die SMS wohl auf absehbare Zeit noch ihre Daseinsberechtigung behalten wird, nutzt heutzutage so gut wie niemand mehr den "Multimedia Messaging Service", kurz die MMS. Einer der Gründe hierfür dürften auch zweifelsohne die mit den Smartphones aufgekommenen Messenger wie WhatsApp, Signal und Co. sein. In diesem Jahr wird nun endgültig das Ende der MMS eingeläutet. Während die hiesigen Provider bereits seit 2020 planen, die MMS endgültig auf das Abstellgleis zu schieben, soll es in diesem Jahr nun wirklich soweit sein. Dies bestätigten beispielsweise die Telekom und Vodafone gegenüber den Kollegen von teltarif.de. Demnach wird die Telekom den Dienst zum 31. Dezember 2022, Voda­fone zum 17. Januar 2023 einstellen. Bedenkt man, dass eine MMS in den meisten Mobil­funk-Tarifen mit € 0,39 pro verschickter Nachricht abge­rechnet werden, ein wohl mehr als überfälliger Schritt im Zeitalter der Messenger.

Eine ähnliche Entwicklung lässt sich übrigens auch in der Schweiz beobachten. Mein Leser Christof (vielen Dank!) machte mich jüngst auf eine Meldung des dortigen Providers Swisscom aufmerksam, laut der man auch dort ab dem 01. Januar 2023 keine MMS mehr anbieten wird. Die Swisscom geht dabei sogar noch einen Schritt weiter und empfiehlt neben iMessage auch Threema, Signal und TeleGuard. Von WhatsApp und Telegram wird hingegen ausdrücklich abgeraten. Als Begründung werden hierfür (durchaus nachvollziehbar) Sicherheitsgründe (problematische Verschlüsselung und undurchsichtige Datenschutzrichtlinien) genannt.

Genau andersrum. Die Tatsache, dass trotz Messengern sich die MMS so lange und vor allem kostenpflichtig gehalten hat, zeigt wie gut die Provider daran verdient haben.

Vergleiche mit der SMS, die seit über zehn Jahren kostenfrei ist. Kostenfrei, nicht eingestellt.
