Microsoft kündigt Ende seiner iOS-Tastatur "SwiftKey" für kommende Woche an

Es ist noch gar nicht mal so lange her, da wurden die Schreie immer lauter, dass Apple doch bitte endlich auch alternative Tastaturen unter iOS zulassen möge. Verfechter dieser Forderung verwiesen bei dieser Gelegenheit immer gerne auf die Wisch-Tastaturen, die sich damals unter Android größerer Beliebtheit erfreuten. Irgendwann hatte Apple schließlich ein Einsehen und führte mit iOS 8 die Möglichkeit ein, alternative Tastaturen auch von Drittanbietern aus dem AppStore zu laden und auf dem iPhone zu installieren. Mal ehrlich, nutzt irgendjemand eine solche alternative Tastatur?

Was anfangs ganz witzig war, lief sich zumindest nach meinem Gefühl nach kürzester Zeit schon wieder tot. Einer der ersten und prominentesten Anbieter einer alternativen Tastatur war seinerzeit Microsoft mit seiner SwiftKey-Tastatur (kostenlos im AppStore), die unter anderem auch die oben angesprochene Wischfunktion enthielt. Nun hat man aber offenbar auch beim Windows-Hersteller erkannt, dass das Thema Tastaturen im AppStore keine große Zukunft hat. Entsprechend hat man inzwischen angekündigt, dass man SwiftKey in der kommenden Woche aus dem AppStore entfernen werde. Gegenüber den Kollegen von ZDNet erklärte man:

"As of October 5, support for SwiftKey iOS will end and it will be delisted from the Apple App Store. Microsoft will continue support for SwiftKey Android as well as the underlying technology that powers the Windows touch keyboard. For those customers who have SwiftKey installed on iOS, it will continue to work until it is manually uninstalled or a user gets a new device. Please visit Support.SwiftKey.com for more information."

Eine konkrete Erklärung für das Ende der Tastatur unter iOS bleibt man damit schuldig. Ich habe meine Vermutung aber ja bereits weiter oben geäußert. Aktuell ist SwiftKey noch als kostenloser Download im AppStore verfügbar. Wer sich die Tastatur noch sichern möchte, kann dies also aktuell noch tun.
