Nach Apple-Rückzug: Samsung steigt in den Markt der Mesh-WLANs ein

Während sich Apple bekanntermaßen inzwischen aus dem Markt der WiFi-Router, trotz der Beliebtheit seiner AirPort-Produkte zurückgezogen hat, nutzt Konkurrent Samung die Gunst der Stunde und steigt in eben diesen ein. Konkret hat man es dabei auf die derzeit äußerst beliebten Mesh-WLANs abgesehen und präsentiert mit dem SmartThings Wi-Fi (via The Verge) einen neuen Router, in dem Netzwerktechnologie von Plume verbaut ist. Zusätzlich zu den Mesh-WLAN Funktionen dient der Router auch gleich noch als Smart-Home-Hub für beliebige SmartThings-Produkte und agiert dabei vergleichbar mit einem Apple TV oder HomePod für HomeKit. Dank der verbauten Plume-Technologie lernt SmartThings Wi-Fi vollautomatisch seine Umgebung kennen und optimiert seine Leistung individuell hierfür, um eine konsistente Verbindung im gesamten Haus-Netzwerk zu ezielen.

Und wieder stellt sich mir die Frage, ob Apples Rückzug nicht ein wenig übereilt gewesen ist. Wie ich bereits in einem Kommentar vor einigen Wochen geschrieben habe, hat Apple hier eine große Möglichkeit einigermaßen leichtfertig weggeworfen, das eigene Ökosystem, welches ja so oft als leuchtendes Beispiel für die perfekte Produkt-Integration herangezogen wird, noch ein Stück runder zu machen. Die WLAN-Infrastruktur bietet hierfür aus meiner Sicht jede Menge Potenzial - auch im Hinblick auf HomeKit. Während es aktuell nach wie vor an Sicherheitskonzepten für das Smart Home fehlt, hätte Apple an dieser Stelle mit den eigenen Routern einen echten Mehrwert herstellen können. Sicherheitsbewusste Nutzer hätten die mit Apple-Firmware abgesicherten AirPort-Produkte sehr wahrscheinlich dem Router vorgezogen, den man von seinem Internetanbieter ins Haus gestellt bekommt. Auch wenn dieser in der Regel heutzutage kostenlos ist. Ob es für die AirPort-Produkte doch noch ein Zurück gibt, halte ich dennoch für eher unwahrscheinlich.

\304hnlich dem MagSafe war die TimeCapsule eine so simple wie geniale und nutzerfreundliche Peripherie die einfach abgeschafft wurde. Ich habe bei uns im Haus eine TimeCapsule und via Ethernet pro Etage je eine AirPort angeschlossen. Somit Decke ich \374ber das ganze Haus schon seit Jahren ein komplettes wlan ab mit Apple Peripherie und hatte mich schon gefragt wann endlich neue Produkte kommen die Mesh f\344hig sind. Aber weit gefehlt.
